Westwood Scoring Competition - The Lost Piano
Original film score written for a melancholic monologue-driven scene. A minimal, piano-driven score where strings, percussion and synths quietly orbit the emotional core.
Westwood Scoring Competition – The Lost Piano
For this re-scoring, Zeno Van Mulders crafted an original film score for a melancholic, monologue-driven scene, focusing on emotional nuance and psychological undercurrents. Rather than underscoring the dialogue directly, the music operates in the margins. Shaping mood, pacing and subtext.
Score Approach
The score is built around piano as its primary narrative instrument, serving as the emotional anchor of the composition. All accompanying elements are developed in direct relation to this core voice: restrained string writing, minimal percussion and subtle synth layers are carefully woven around the piano to enhance depth and tension without distracting from the scene.
The orchestration remains intentionally sparse, allowing space for the monologue while supporting the emotional arc through texture, harmony and dynamics. This controlled palette reinforces the melancholic tone of the film and ensures the music remains supportive rather than dominant.
